A gift for the whole desk
You are a volunteer at the front desk of a rehabilitation hospital, and Caius has asked you to recommend what to do.
Mrs. Bell, whose husband recently finished therapy here, left an embroidered wall hanging for the volunteer team after asking what would be useful. Shared gifts are allowed with approval. Callista, a fellow volunteer, and Caius, the volunteer supervisor, turn to you at the desk.
The scene
Callista: Let's hang it near the entrance for Mrs. Bell's visits.
Caius: I'm worried, Callista. Displaying this gift sets expectations for later donors.
Callista: She asked what we needed; hiding her handmade gift would hurt.
Caius: Approval is mine, but recommend a plan and how we'll thank her.
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend to Caius, and how would you respond to Mrs. Bell?
- 2When is it right to bend a custom to honor someone's kindness, and when should you hold to it?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
