Scene to read · Professionalism, Communication
A key for watering only
You are a neighbor holding a spare key to Ms. Okafor's apartment, given only for watering her plants while she travels.
In the hallway outside Ms. Okafor's door, Joelle, a neighbor who lent her a serving dish, and Jolanta, Ms. Okafor's sister, wait for you. Jolanta has no key. Ms. Okafor has not yet answered a message about the dish. You have the key in your hand.
The scene
Joelle: I'm sorry to rush you, but I need my serving dish tonight for dinner.
Jolanta: I understand, but she only trusted you with the key for her plants.
Joelle: I'd grab it in ten seconds. She'd never notice I'd been inside.
Jolanta: She might. Let's wait for her reply. You hold the key, so it's your call.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Joelle and Jolanta?
- 2How do you decide when it is appropriate to use access someone gave you for a limited purpose?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
