Written scenario · Professionalism, Equity

The inspiring photo

You are a volunteer photographer asked to take pictures for the hospital volunteer newsletter.

The editor asks you to photograph a visitor in a wheelchair in the lobby garden and describes the image as "inspiring." When you ask, the visitor says yes right away, but she hesitates when the editor mentions a caption. The editor needs the photos within the hour for the layout. The visitor has not seen the caption wording. You decide whether to take the photos and submit as planned.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to slow down or push back on a request from someone responsible for a project in order to protect how a person is portrayed?

What raters look for

Professionalism
Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
