Scene to read · Professionalism, Ethics

The only one not in

You work at the front desk of a dental office.

During the lunch lull, Yumi, a sales rep for the whitening kit sold at your counter, is setting out a new display. Camila, the office manager, is beside you. Money is tight for you this month. Patients are not told that front desk staff are rewarded for recommending the kit.

The scene

Yumi: Ten-dollar gift card for every kit you recommend at checkout. No paperwork. I just tally.

Camila: The rest of the front desk signed up in March. It's allowed.

Yumi: And it's a good kit. You're not selling anyone junk.

Camila: No pressure either way. You'd just be the only one not in.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Yumi and Camila, and would you take part?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you were offered a benefit that might have affected your judgment. What did you do?
