Scene to read · Problem solving, Ethics

A co-signer by Friday

You are Kabir's aunt or uncle, and he has asked you to co-sign a car loan for him.

Your nephew Kabir, 24, needs a co-signer by Friday for a used-car loan. His new warehouse job starts Monday before the early buses run, and without a car he loses it. Two years ago, you and your partner Hugo lent Kabir $3,000, and he never repaid it. The loan papers sit on the living room sofa.

The scene

Kabir: The job starts Monday, and the bus doesn't reach the warehouse before six.

Hugo: The last three thousand never came back, Kabir. Not a single payment.

Kabir: I know. This time is different. I'll have real wages, not gig work.

Hugo: Maybe. But if you miss payments, it's our credit and our house savings.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Kabir and Hugo?
  2. 2How do you tell the difference between helping someone and making it easier for them to keep repeating a problem?
