The full family archive

You are the third sibling, asked by Hadrian and Hamish to propose a rule for the family photo archive.

In the home office, your older brother Hamish, 50, who pays for and organizes the shared family photo cloud, sits at the desktop with your brother Hadrian, 37. The storage is full. Hamish wants duplicate clips deleted, while Hadrian uploads large raw videos.

The scene

Hamish: The cloud's full again. I pay for it; duplicate clips must go.

Hadrian: Every clip's irreplaceable: Mom laughing, kids growing up. I won't choose.

Hamish: Then you pay for more space; sorting still takes my weekend.

Hadrian: Fine, but nothing gets deleted without me. You decide the rule.

The two questions

  1. 1What rule would you propose for the family archive, and how would you explain it to Hamish and Hadrian?
  2. 2When a shared resource is limited and people value it differently, how do you decide who gives something up?
