She hates surprises
You are helping two friends set up a surprise sixtieth birthday party for your friend Carol.
Thirty guests arrive at the rented room in an hour, and you are due to collect Carol. While you hang decorations, Brigitte stops and turns to you and Zainab.
The scene
Brigitte: I just remembered. Carol once said she'd walk out of a surprise party.
Zainab: That was years ago, and she was laughing. Thirty people are already driving here.
Brigitte: We could call and warn her. Then at least she walks in ready.
Zainab: And ruin it over one remark? You're collecting her. What do we do?
The two questions
- 1What would you suggest to Brigitte and Zainab?
- 2How do you make a decision for someone else when you cannot ask them what they want?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
