One dinner or two?

You are a mutual friend of Yannis and Yara, and they have asked you to help them plan this year's holiday dinner.

In Yara's living room, Yannis and Yara are planning the annual friends holiday dinner, usually thirty people with plenty of intoxicating drinks. Yannis has been sober for four months. Yara has hosted the dinner for ten years, and both want to keep the tradition.

The scene

Yara: Thirty people, same long table. Everyone shows up that one night.

Yannis: I want to come, Yara, but not with drinking everywhere. Something smaller?

Yara: Small isn't our tradition. I don't want to change it entirely.

Yannis: I'm not asking you to cancel. You two know everyone. Ideas?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you suggest to Yannis and Yara, and why?
  2. 2How do you decide when a shared plan should be split into separate versions, and when everyone should compromise on one?
