Thinner than the quote

You are helping your father get the house ready for your mother's return from the hospital.

Your mother comes home on Friday and will use a wheelchair. In the driveway, beside the half-built ramp, you have just pointed out that the railing posts are thinner than the ones in the written quote. Your father, Nikhil, and the contractor, Enzo, are with you.

The scene

Enzo: The posts in the quote are back-ordered three weeks. These are thinner, but rated for railings.

Nikhil: She's home Friday. I can't carry her up those steps.

Enzo: I can swap them later. That's a second visit, about four hundred more.

Nikhil: Which I don't have. You read the quote. Do we stop the job?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to your father and to Enzo?
  2. 2How do you decide when something is safe enough to go ahead?
