Scene to read · Resilience, Self-awareness
Adviser to the new chair
You chaired a local historical society for nine years until last week, when the members voted you out.
The members chose Nkechi, who campaigned on digitizing the collection and recruiting younger volunteers. In the archive room, as you pack up your files, she comes in with a request. Lan, a longtime board member and your old ally, is helping you pack.
The scene
Nkechi: Nobody knows this collection like you. Stay on as my adviser?
Lan: Sit in the corner after nine years? In my day, a chair left with dignity.
Nkechi: I'm changing things, yes. I'd rather change them with your advice than without.
Lan: Advice nobody has to take. Don't answer out of politeness. What do you want?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Nkechi, and what would you say to Lan?
- 2After a setback, how do you decide between staying involved in a smaller role and walking away?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
