Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy
Post the flop?
You are a first-time performer at a café's open-mic night.
Your first five-minute comedy set at the café's open-mic drew almost no laughs. Franziska, the host and a neighbor from your building, runs the café's social media page, which many neighbors follow. Your close friend Adaeze came to watch. The room has emptied, and the three of you sit at a corner table.
The scene
Franziska: Tough crowd tonight! Next Thursday's slot is yours if you want it.
Adaeze: Confession: I recorded your whole set. I can delete it right now.
Franziska: Or I post it on our page. Neighbors love cheering for a second try.
Adaeze: Half our building follows that page, though. Honestly, you could skip next week.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide about the recording and next week's slot, and why?
- 2When is it worth letting other people watch you struggle, and when is it better to let a setback go privately?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
