Scene to read · Resilience, Ethics

Thirty registered

You organized a public talk for your astronomy club together with Beatriz.

After two months of planning, four people came, though thirty had registered. In the function room afterward, among rows of empty chairs, Beatriz, who wears hearing aids, is filling in the sponsor's report, which you both sign, while the speaker, Sakura, packs up her notes.

The scene

Sakura: So, four people. Tell me honestly, was it me, or the night?

Beatriz: It wasn't you. Thirty registered. The form says participants, so I'm writing thirty.

Sakura: Registered isn't attended. But I'd hate to be why your series ended.

Beatriz: One bad night shouldn't cancel five more talks. You sign too. Thirty or four?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Sakura and Beatriz, and what goes on the form?
  2. 2How should someone report a disappointing result to the people who paid for it?
