Scene to read · Resilience, Communication
The spot Dewi was hoping for
You are a student in an adult improv class performing its first showcase.
In front of a small theater audience, you froze mid-scene until your scene partner Dewi, a classmate in her sixties, covered by using the character she'd been saving for later. Now, in the wings, Dewi and your teacher Shira come over. The next group is about to go on.
The scene
Dewi: Nobody noticed, really. But I lost my best bit covering for you.
Shira: The audience noticed, and that's fine. There's one open spot next scene. It's yours.
Dewi: I hoped that spot would be mine. You rest tonight, no shame.
Shira: Or go now, while they're still watching, before the fear sets in.
The two questions
- 1Do you take the open spot or leave it for Dewi, and what would you say to each of them?
- 2When, if ever, should you put your own growth ahead of a friend who has just helped you?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
