One dry corner by the stove

You are a classmate on the field course, and the group has asked you to mediate between Fairuz and Farhan about the one dry spot.

In the bunkhouse, after a roof leak soaked everyone's gear, your rain-delayed field course must leave for the next site by noon. The woodstove corner is the only dry space, and it has room for either one cot or the drying rack. Fairuz has done most of the chores all week. Farhan, who has a fever, has done little.

The scene

Fairuz: I've hauled water and cooked all week. I'm done until others pull their weight.

Farhan: I know, and I'm sorry. But I'm shaking, and I need that corner.

Fairuz: If you take it, the rack goes out, and everyone's gear stays soaked.

Farhan: If I'm not lying down, I'll be useless to everyone by noon. You decide.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you decide about the stove corner and the cleanup, and what would you say to Fairuz and Farhan?
  2. 2How do you help a group keep going when a setback lands on people who are already worn down?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
