Written scenario · Resilience, Empathy
Partners until Friday
You are a mature student retraining as a land surveyor.
At 34 you left ten years in retail management for a full-time surveying diploma, paid from savings. Your first test comes back with the lowest mark in a class of people a decade younger. Rosemary, a 24-year-old classmate, asks you to stay her partner for this term's jointly graded field projects. She plans through late-night group chats and shared apps. You work on paper at dawn and have already missed two of her messages. Pairs can change until Friday, and you worry your mark and habits would pull her grade down.
The two questions
- 1Would you stay Rosemary's partner or step back before Friday, and why?
- 2When a first result puts you at the bottom of a much younger group, how do you decide whether to keep adapting to fit in with them or to let go and work in the way that suits you?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
