Scene to read · Resilience, Self-awareness
Tomorrow at eight
You are a master's student who has just defended your thesis.
Your defense ended with major revisions required and fourteen pages of written comments. In the hallway outside the room, your friend Howard, who came to watch, is waiting with you when Anjana, a member of your committee, comes out.
The scene
Anjana: I leave on sabbatical Friday. Tomorrow at eight, I'll walk you through every comment.
Howard: Tomorrow? You just heard two hours of what's wrong with three years' work.
Anjana: It's kinder with a guide. Read those pages alone and they'll sound worse.
Howard: Or read them in a month, when they can't flatten you.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Anjana and Howard?
- 2After a setback, how do you tell whether you need distance from it or need to face it straight away?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
