Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy
One point short
You take evening classes at a language school and sat its advanced exam last week.
The results are up: after a year of study, you fell one point short of the advanced certificate, which a college course you want requires. The intermediate certificate would be enough for a better-paid post at the depot where you work. Your classmate Bernardo passed; in the school lobby, your teacher, Cormac, has come out to find you both.
The scene
Cormac: One point. I'm sorry. The repeat class starts Monday, four more months.
Bernardo: Or sit the intermediate next week. It's enough for the job at the depot.
Cormac: The college course only takes the advanced, though.
Bernardo: Where I'm from, you take the job in your hand. College can wait a year.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and how would you respond to Cormac and Bernardo?
- 2How do you tell the difference between a setback worth pushing through and a sign to change your goal?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
