The loan that came due

You are a member of a neighborhood mutual aid circle, asked to cast the deciding view tonight.

In a member's living room, the circle's treasurer, Matias, and fellow member Maurizio are split. Maurizio's fund loan is overdue after his work hours were cut. Other members repaid on time, some at real sacrifice. The vote is tied, and your view decides.

The scene

Matias: Maurizio, your loan is two months overdue. Others sacrificed, repaying on time.

Maurizio: I know, and I'm sorry. My hours were cut; rent comes first.

Matias: I'm not shaming you. Forgiving it feels unfair to members and fund.

Maurizio: I'll pay what I can. Please don't make me beg publicly.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you decide, and how would you explain it to Matias and Maurizio?
  2. 2How do you decide when to hold people to an agreement and when to make an exception?
