Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy
Still on the phone tree
You are the co-founder who built the neighborhood phone tree and still coordinates its volunteer callers.
In a community center side room, you meet Lorelei, aged 59, a caller, and Lucan, 29, who has used the tree for years. The city's new alert app sends the same warnings, and Lucan doesn't own a smartphone. You decide whether the tree continues.
The scene
Lorelei: The app sends everything we do. My evenings are gone. Retire this?
Lucan: I don't own a smartphone. Your call is how I hear.
Lorelei: I know, I'd miss it. Five people can't justify twelve callers.
Lucan: Please tell me honestly which way you're leaning. I'll plan around it.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide about the phone tree, and what would you say to Lorelei and Lucan?
- 2How do you decide when work you built and care about has stopped being needed in its current form?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
