Scene to read · Resilience, Equity
Shallow end, deep discouragement
You are an adult learner in a beginner swim class who has been struggling to keep up with the lessons.
At the edge of a community pool, the adult beginner class is gathered. Pascal is the instructor, and Pascale is a classmate; you are another learner who has also struggled. Pascal has a set schedule for the course.
The scene
Pascale: Pascal, could we spend another week practicing floating? We're still uncomfortable.
Pascal: I understand, Pascale, but most are ready, and our schedule's tight.
Pascale: Then we just keep sinking quietly? That doesn't feel very fair.
Pascal: I'm open to ideas, but can't delay everyone. What about you?
The two questions
- 1What would you do in this situation, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time you kept working at something that was difficult for you. What helped you keep going, and what did you do about the support you needed?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
