Scene to read · Resilience, Communication
The whole story
You are a student appealing the loss of your scholarship.
You failed two courses last term. You were ill for three weeks, but afterward you stopped going to class for a month and told only your friend Kunal. He has come with you to the student services appeals desk, where Neil, the appeals officer, is about to start your appeal form.
The scene
Neil: The committee wants the whole picture, not just the illness. Partial accounts tend to come apart.
Kunal: Could we have a minute before we start the form?
Neil: Of course. I'll grab a printout. Take your time.
Kunal: That lost month was the illness too. Just say ill. I can't watch you leave.
The two questions
- 1What would you write in the appeal, and what would you say to Kunal?
- 2After a failure, what is the difference between explaining what happened and making excuses?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
