Scene to read · Resilience, Self-awareness
Fresh legs
You have volunteered at a community kitchen for four years.
Moana, the coordinator, has taught you everything from ordering to food safety. Today the city refused the kitchen's grant application for the third year running. In the small office, with Jana, a newer volunteer, Moana folds the letter and looks at you.
The scene
Moana: Third no. I can't write a fourth. I'm stepping down in June.
Jana: Honestly, maybe it's time. This place has taken everything you had.
Moana: Eighty people still eat here. And you know this kitchen better than anyone. Will you take it on?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Moana?
- 2How do you decide whether to keep going with something that has failed repeatedly?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
