Scene to read · Self-awareness, Equity
Four blocks from here
You are a student in an evening pottery class.
At the coffee corner during the break, with other classmates in earshot, you have just told your classmate Noemi, 75, that her English is really good. Giorgio, another classmate, is beside her.
The scene
Noemi: Thank you, dear. I'd hope so. I was born four blocks from here.
Giorgio: Four blocks! Now I'm curious what made you think otherwise.
Noemi: Oh, leave it, Giorgio. Don't fuss, either of you. It's only coffee talk.
Giorgio: I got asked that kind of thing for years. I'd want an answer.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Noemi and Giorgio?
- 2How can a person notice an assumption they did not know they were making?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
