Scene to read · Self-awareness, Communication
Always first
You are taking a weekly history tutorial at a university.
After class your tutor, Amal, asks you to stay for a moment. The room has emptied except for Alejandro, a classmate, who is packing up at the next desk and can hear every word.
The scene
Amal: You're always first, and usually right. Could you wait ten seconds before answering?
Alejandro: About time, honestly. Some of us need a minute to get there.
Alejandro: No offense. I just never find out whether I knew it myself.
Amal: Your answers help, too. Does this feel unfair to you? Say so.
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Amal and Alejandro?
- 2How can a strength become a problem for the people around you, and how would you notice?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
