Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy
The sentence I finished for her
You are the chair of a neighborhood committee, and you often finish members' sentences to keep meetings on time.
In the library meeting room, co-chair Melchior, 50, and quiet member Merrick, 63, speak with you as the session ends. You finished Merrick's bench proposal as a recommendation for permanent installation, and the committee approved it. Other members are packing up nearby. Five minutes remain before closing; the grant application is due tonight, and changing the approved plan requires another vote.
The scene
Melchior: When you finished that sentence, did you mean approve or trial?
Merrick: A trial. I nodded because you moved straight to the vote.
Melchior: We've five minutes before closing; reopening this could delay the funding.
Merrick: I don't want funding delayed, but that's not what I proposed.
The two questions
- 1What would you do now about the vote and grant application, and how would you address your habit of finishing members' sentences?
- 2Tell us about a time you noticed a habit of yours was affecting someone else. What did you do about it?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
