Twenty years of the same dances

You are the longtime caller at a folk dance club and must decide how to respond to a proposed program change.

During a break at a community hall dance evening, Fabiola, 24, a newer member, asks to introduce dances from her tradition. Fabiana, 54, a longtime dancer, values the familiar repertoire, which has barely changed in twenty years. You notice yourself bristling at the suggestion, even though Fabiola clearly loves the club.

The scene

Fabiola: I'd love to teach two dances from home. People keep asking.

Fabiana: These familiar dances are why many of us keep coming back.

Fabiola: I love coming too, but our traditions never get a turn.

Fabiana: Could we include them without losing the evening we've built here?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Fabiola and Fabiana?
  2. 2How do you tell the difference between protecting something valuable and simply resisting change because it's uncomfortable?

What raters look for

Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
