Scene to read · Self-awareness, Professionalism

Your mentor's right here

You are a longtime member of a community ceramics club.

Two months ago you promised to mentor Tendai, a new member who speaks English as a second language. Then a new job swallowed your evenings, and you forgot. Tonight you walk into the kiln room, where Tendai is unloading his cracked bowls and Lars, another member, has stopped to help him.

The scene

Lars: Tendai, these cracked from air in the clay. Nobody showed you wedging?

Tendai: It is okay. I watched videos. I did not want to bother anybody.

Lars: Well, your mentor's standing right here. I thought somebody was looking after you.

Tendai: You are busy, I know. If it is too much, I can ask Lars.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Tendai and Lars?
  2. 2What should you do when you can no longer keep a commitment the way you promised?

What raters look for
