Scene to read · Self-awareness, Collaboration

Edits at two in the morning

You are a third member of a class project group, and Alvar and Masao ask you to help resolve their disagreement before peer evaluations are due tonight.

In a university library study room, Masao, 21, and Alvar, 23, are finishing your group report with you. Masao scrolls his phone during meetings, but the instructor praises his sections, and you recently noticed his late-night contributions in the shared document history. The group missed its draft deadline; you don't know whether Masao's disengagement contributed or why he's distracted.

The scene

Alvar: You're on your phone during meetings, and we missed our deadline.

Masao: My sections were ready, but I'd rather keep why I'm distracted private.

Alvar: Good writing matters, but meetings matter too. How should we rate that?

Masao: Could you consider the document history without assuming meetings tell everything?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Alvar and Masao, and how would you use what you noticed in the document history when completing your evaluation?
  2. 2How do you make sure your judgment of someone's effort isn't shaped mainly by what you happen to see them doing?

What raters look for

Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
