Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy
I would like to try
You volunteer with a settlement agency and have accompanied Birgit, who arrived two months ago, to register for health coverage.
Birgit, who is sixty-six, speaks slow, careful English. To save time, you have answered every one of the clerk's questions for her. The office closes in fifteen minutes; a mistake on the form means rebooking next month, and she needs the coverage in place for a specialist visit next week. At the front desk, she touches your arm as Emeka, the clerk, waits.
The scene
Birgit: Please, let me try. At home I ran a school. Here I'm like a child.
Emeka: Fine by me. But one wrong box means rebooking next month.
Birgit: Next month is too late, yes? Maybe... no. I don't know. What do you think?
Emeka: Eleven questions left, and I close in fifteen. Who's answering?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Birgit?
- 2When does helping someone start to take something away from them?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
