Half a shelf I built

You teach a beginner woodworking class for adults at a makerspace.

Yuki is the slowest learner in tonight's group. Three times you have taken the hand saw and finished her cut so the class could keep moving. The room closes at nine, and four other learners are waiting for the same workstation. Your co-instructor Burt is at her bench with you.

What's said in the scene

Yuki: Could you let me finish one cut myself? I came here to learn.

Burt: Yuki, four people need this bench, and we lose the room at nine.

Yuki: I'd rather go home with half a shelf I built.

Burt: And they'd rather go home with a whole one. They paid too. Your call.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say and do?
  2. 2Describe a time your way of helping someone got in the way of what they needed. What did you learn?

What raters look for

Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
