Written scenario · Self-awareness, Equity
Ninety-one and seventy-eight
You are an adult student in a community college furniture-making certificate.
For the final assessment you and Ming, your bench partner, built an oak cabinet for a panel of assessors. He drew the design and cut most of the joints, roughly two-thirds of the work, while you did the sanding and finish and explained the piece to the panel. The assessors scored the two of you separately: 91 for you, 78 for him. Your first feeling was that you had earned it. Ming laughs it off and says talking to assessors was never his strength. Score reviews close on Friday, only the two of you know who did what, and a review could move either number.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2How can you tell when your sense that you earned something is accurate and when it is simply convenient?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
