Scene to read · Self-awareness, Equity
Notes that assume too much
You are the author of widely shared class notes, sitting with your friends Alban and Albina at a campus café table.
Alban, 38, and Albina, 51, are returning students who use your notes alongside many classmates. Your notes assume background knowledge from your high-school coursework; Albina, the first in her family to attend university, says she cannot follow them. With exams approaching, a full rewrite would take much of the weekend you planned for your own studying.
The scene
Albina: Your notes skip steps I never learned. I've read them three times.
Alban: You've got exams too. You can't spend your whole weekend rewriting.
Albina: I'm not asking for perfect notes, just help with the missing basics.
Alban: Could you add a few explanations without falling behind on your studying?
The two questions
- 1What would you do about the notes, and what would you say to Albina and Alban?
- 2How do you notice the limits of your own knowledge or materials, and what do you do when you find them?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
