Scene to read · Self-awareness, Ethics
What was your objection?
You sit on your college's student council.
Tonight you voted against Dov's proposal to extend library hours, and it failed by one vote. You could not name a flaw in it; privately, you find Dov smug. In the emptying chamber, your friend Chidinma, a returning student on the council, is beside you when Dov walks over.
The scene
Dov: One vote. Can I ask what your objection was? I'd like to fix it.
Chidinma: Honestly? I think you voted against the person, not the proposal.
Dov: If that's true, I'd rather know. If it's the budget, I've got numbers.
Chidinma: You'd want a straight answer if it were your proposal. So?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Dov?
- 2How can you tell whether you are judging an idea or the person who proposed it?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
