Scene to read · Self-awareness, Communication
You sounded so sure
You are waiting at a subway station with a friend.
At the station map board, a tourist named Ishita asked you the way to the airport line, and you answered without hesitating: platform two. You last rode that line a year ago, and the map shows routes but not platform numbers. Your friend Ignacio is beside you as a train is announced.
The scene
Ishita: Platform two, got it. Thank you! My flight's at six, so I'll run.
Ignacio: Wait, no. Airport's platform four. Two goes to the harbor. I'm sure.
Ishita: They're announcing two right now. The next airport train's in thirty minutes. Which?
Ignacio: You said it so confidently. But when did you last actually ride it?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Ishita, and why?
- 2Why do people sometimes sound more certain than they are, and what does that cost the people relying on them?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
