Scene to read · Self-awareness, Collaboration
What were you thinking?
You sit on the committee of an amateur astronomy society.
Over the weekend, meaning to help, you rebuilt the membership spreadsheet that Odile, a volunteer, has kept for nine years; any committee member may edit the society's files. She has offered to resign, and renewal notices go out Friday. At the committee table, the chair, Malcolm, and the treasurer, Kofi, turn to you.
The scene
Malcolm: Odile's offered to step down. She found out by opening the file. What were you thinking?
Kofi: The new one's better, though. Renewals took her a week.
Malcolm: Better isn't the point. She should've been asked.
Kofi: Notices go out Friday, and her old file can't send them. Keep yours or restore hers?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Malcolm, and what would you do next?
- 2When you are confident your way is better, how do you decide whether a change is yours to make?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
