Scene to read · Self-awareness, Equity
The usual Saturday
You are the volunteer who handles reservations at a park pavilion, and you have quietly let the neighborhood association keep its usual Saturday for years.
At the reservation desk, Myriam from the neighborhood association and Nadine, a newer resident, both want the same Saturday. Nadine has a booking for a family reunion. The posted rules say nothing about reserved dates for the association. Both turn to you.
The scene
Myriam: Everyone knows our association holds this usual Saturday, including the desk.
Nadine: Myriam, the posted rules don't mention that arrangement. I booked fairly.
Myriam: Goodwill matters; we run neighborhood cleanups and everyone's summer picnic here.
Nadine: I appreciate that. My family's traveling for this date; what's decided?
The two questions
- 1What would you do about this Saturday, and what would you say to Myriam and Nadine?
- 2When has a habit you'd gone along with turned out to be unfair, and how should you decide whether to change it?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
