The sensor story
You are a graduate student who asked your advisor for a one-week extension on a thesis chapter.
You blamed your teaching workload, but really you spent the week on a side project and put the chapter off. In your advisor Keisha's office, your close friend and labmate Leandro is sitting in on the joint meeting when she brings it up.
The scene
Keisha: Before I sign this: your grading load looked light last week. What happened?
Leandro: It was the lab, professor. The sensor broke, and we both lost three days.
Keisha: Three days? Nobody logged a repair. I'd like to hear it from you.
Leandro: It's true, I was there. Tell her about the sensor.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Keisha, and what would you say to Leandro afterward?
- 2Why can it be harder to admit a mistake once someone else has defended you?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
