Handed the microphone

You helped organize a neighborhood mural project.

At the unveiling, a council member thanks you by name to warm applause; you were the one who spoke at meetings and dealt with the city. Ines, a quieter volunteer in her seventies, did at least as much: she primed the wall, mixed the paint and came every morning. She is at the back, smiling, and she has told you before that she dislikes a fuss. You notice that you wanted the applause more than the finished wall. The council member hands you the microphone for a few words.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say with the microphone, and why?
  2. 2What does wanting recognition tell you about your reasons for doing something, and does it matter?

What raters look for

Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
Motivation
Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
