Scene to read · Self-awareness, Equity
Just looking
You are collecting a birthday cake at a crowded bakery on a Saturday morning.
The surprise party for your mother's seventieth starts in ten minutes across town, you are bringing the cake, and your ride is double-parked outside. In a packed shop, you stepped up to the counter past Eleanor, 77, who was standing back from the display case; you assumed she was only looking. Noa, the baker, comes to the register.
The scene
Noa: Sorry, I lost track. Which of you was first?
Eleanor: I was. Ten minutes. I stand back so the glass doesn't fog my glasses.
Noa: And you're the boxed lemon cake? Thirty seconds, that one.
Eleanor: Two dozen seeded rolls to slice. My bus is at ten past.
Noa: Folks are waiting. Who's first?
The two questions
- 1What would you say and do?
- 2What can small assumptions about strangers tell us about ourselves?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
