How Long Should Medical School Interview Answers Be? (2026 Data)
What 4,690 scored mock interview answers show: the typical first answer runs about 2 minutes, answers under a minute miss a core point 33% of the time, and going past 3 minutes adds little.
On this page
Plan on 2 to 3 minutes for your first answer in an MMI station and up to 2 minutes in a traditional interview, then let the follow-up questions carry the rest. We measured 4,690 scored practice answers from 604 medical school applicants. The median first answer ran 267 words, about 2 minutes at the 141 words a minute applicants actually speak, and 46% went past 2 minutes. Short answers were the problem, not long ones: under a minute, 33% missed a core point, against 21% at 2 to 3 minutes. Past 3 minutes, answers did no better.
What 4,690 answers show
The first answer is everything you say before the interviewer's first follow-up question. Here is how often it missed a core point, and how it scored against the same person's other answers, by length:
| First answer | Missed a core point | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 minuteunder 141 words, 955 answers | 33% | -1.9 |
| 1 to 2 minutes141 to 281 words, 1,571 answers | 26% | -0.3 |
| 2 to 3 minutes282 to 422 words, 1,166 answers | 21% | +0.8 |
| 3 to 4 minutes423 to 563 words, 559 answers | 18% | +1.5 |
| Over 4 minutes564+ words, 439 answers | 18% | +1.0 |
20% of first answers stopped under a minute, and they did worst on both counts: 33% missed a core point and they scored -1.9 against the applicant's own average. At 2 to 3 minutes, misses fell to 21%. Past 3 minutes they stayed at about 18%, and scores stopped rising (+1.5 and +1.0). So a longer answer was never punished, but after about 3 minutes it no longer helped.
How many words fit in a minute
Applicants spoke at a median of 141 words a minute, pauses included, and the middle half spoke at 119 to 170 (732 answers). So 1 minute is about 140 words, 1.5 minutes about 210 words, 2 minutes about 280 words, and 3 minutes about 420 words.
The median first answer, 267 words, is about 2 minutes. The middle half ran 163 to 397 words.
Scenarios vs personal questions
Applicants talked longest on personal questions:
- Personal and behavioral: 298 words, 2.1 minutes (2,217 answers)
- Health policy and social issues: 248 words, 1.8 minutes (329 answers)
- Ethics scenarios: 238 words, 1.7 minutes (940 answers)
- Role-play stations: 75 words, 0.5 minutes (157 answers)
Length mattered most where answers were shortest. On ethics and policy scenarios, an answer under a minute scored 1.9 points lower than a 1 to 2 minute one from the same applicants (279 and 443 answers). Scenarios need room: the conflict, the people affected, your options and a decision. On personal questions, length barely mattered: every band from under a minute to over 4 landed within 1 point of the others. Role-play first turns are short because the station is a conversation, so judge those by the whole exchange.
How long to talk in each format
- MMI station. The AAMC describes 2 minutes to prepare, then a conversation of five to eight minutes, and UA Phoenix gives two minutes to read and seven to talk. Open with 2 to 3 minutes that reach a decision, then answer the follow-ups.
- Traditional or panel interview. 20 to 30 seconds for a simple question, 60 to 90 seconds for "Tell me about yourself", about 90 seconds for "Why medicine?" and 90 seconds to 2 minutes for a "Tell me about a time" story. Two minutes is the most for one answer. These are personal questions, where length made little difference in our data, so stop once you have made your point.
- Follow-ups. Our AI interviewer asked a median of 3 per station. Answer each in a few sentences, because they test the reasoning behind your first answer.
Fill the time without rambling
Short answers usually aren't short on words. They skip a step. Give 2 minutes a shape instead of padding it:
- Open with the right first line. On a scenario, say what you would want to find out. On an opinion question, say what it is really about. On a "why" question, give your reason.
- Give two or three reasons, each with one specific detail.
- On a scenario, name who is affected and the conflict, in plain words.
- End on what you would do. If they asked for a decision, say it.
The missing step is most often the decision. Practice one answer on a timer and count your words: if you are under 141 words in a scenario, check that you didn't skip a step.
How we measured
4,690 completed, AI-scored mock interviews by 604 medical school applicants on Confetto, Aug 26 to Oct 17, 2026, all on the current scoring rubric, each with at least 60 spoken words. Internal, test and deleted accounts are left out, groups under 30 applicants are not shown, and no names, emails or answer text were used. Words come from speech-to-text. A core point is one the AI rubric flags as missing from the answer. "Score against own average" compares each answer with the same applicant's other answers, so stronger or weaker applicants don't skew it, and we adjusted for the October 2 scoring model upgrade.
The pattern holds when total length is held steady. Among sessions of 180 to 550 spoken words in total, a first answer under a minute scored -3.0 and one of 2 to 3 minutes +2.7 (221 and 358 answers).

Frequently asked questions
How long should an MMI answer be?
Plan on 2 to 3 minutes for your first answer, then use the follow-up questions for the rest of the station. Most MMI stations give you about 2 minutes to read and 5 to 8 minutes to talk. In our data, first answers under a minute missed a core point 33% of the time, against 21% at 2 to 3 minutes.
How many words is a 2 minute answer?
About 280 words. Medical school applicants in our mock interviews spoke at a median of 141 words a minute, pauses included, and the middle half spoke at 119 to 170. So 1 minute is about 140 words and 3 minutes about 420.
Is a long interview answer bad?
Not in our data, as long as it answers the question. Answers of 3 to 4 minutes scored +1.5 points against the same applicant's average, and over 4 minutes +1.0. Long answers only stopped helping. Say your point first so a long answer never sounds lost.
How long should "Tell me about yourself" be?
About 60 to 90 seconds in a traditional interview, then let them ask. On personal questions like this one, length made little difference to scores in our data: every length band landed within 1 point of the others.
What if I run out of things to say before the time is up?
Stop and check the task. If the question asked what you would do, say your decision and why. Then name who else is affected or what would change your mind. A clear, finished answer with time left beats filling the silence, and the interviewer will usually follow up.
