Scene to read · Collaboration, Equity
One towel, your choice
You are at a backyard cookout for your grandmother's birthday.
The cake is finished and the light is going. As every year, your two aunts have disappeared into the kitchen with the dishes while everyone else stays in the lawn chairs. At the patio table with you are their husbands, Feng and Pavel; Pavel ran the grill all afternoon. Feng picks up two dish towels.
The scene
Feng: They're doing the dishes again. Where I grew up, everybody clears. Coming?
Pavel: Last time I tried, your aunt handed me my drink and pointed at the door.
Feng: One try in thirty years, Pavel.
Pavel: That's their hour together. Barge in and you're telling them they do it wrong.
Feng: Catch. One towel, your choice.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Feng and Pavel?
- 2Describe a time you noticed that the work in a group was shared unevenly. What did you do about it?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
