Blaming the ice
You play lead on an adult curling team.
Your team has just lost a third straight game. In the rink's warm room, Aylin, the skip who has led the team for eight years, sits unlacing her shoes; your close friend Tala, who plays second, is beside you. You found the ice tricky tonight, but you also watched Aylin's last stones slide long. The Eastside rink is a forty-minute drive that two of your four cannot manage.
The scene
Aylin: That ice was awful again. I'm moving us to the Eastside rink.
Tala: Aylin, it wasn't the ice. Your last two stones were heavy.
Aylin: Eight years I've skipped this team. I think I'd know.
Tala: You saw it too. Tell her. I can't be the only one.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Aylin and Tala?
- 2Describe a time you had to decide whether to give honest feedback to a teammate or leader after a disappointment. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
