A quieter group chat

You are a longtime friend who set up the group chat that Tyrone and Luca are talking about.

At your kitchen table, phones out, your friends Tyrone, 70, and Luca, 58, are scrolling the group chat you started for five old friends: the three of you, Maria and Gordon. Gordon, widowed last year, posts dozens of messages a day. Luca's news about his first grandson got buried under them.

The scene

Tyrone: I only saw your grandson news Tuesday, Luca. Gordon's photos buried it.

Luca: Let's start a quieter chat for the rest of us. You made the first.

Tyrone: Gordon's been lonely since Ruth died, though. That chat's half his day.

Luca: We'd keep the old chat going too. Nobody's kicked out. Just say yes.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Tyrone and Luca, and would you create the new chat? Why or why not?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to balance what most people in a group wanted against how it would affect one person.
