Scene to read · Collaboration, Ethics

Whose name goes where?

You are a third cousin laying out the pages of the family cookbook.

At Hermina's dining room table, covered in recipe cards, you are finishing the credits page. Hermina, 65, gave the best-known recipes. Horatio, 35, typed, tested and edited most of the book. Both come over to you.

The scene

Hermina: I'd like alphabetical credits, Horatio. This book belongs to everyone here.

Horatio: I respect that, Hermina, but my months testing and editing disappear.

Hermina: Mentioning hours would make aunts who only sent recipes feel small.

Horatio: Nobody's being made small. You're laying out credits; what goes there?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you put on the credits page, and what would you say to Hermina and Horatio?
  2. 2How do you decide when recognition in a shared project should reflect the amount of work done and when it should be equal?

What raters look for
