Vouch for today's seat
You are a paddler on an outrigger canoe crew, asked to mediate between your crewmate Jatin and Coach Kamau.
At the beach ramp before dawn, Jatin, 34, arrives late without a paddle or life vest for the last practice before Saturday's regional race. Coach Kamau, 52, has spare gear available; nobody paddles without a properly fitted vest. The lateness rule gives today's seat to Dev, the prepared alternate, unless you vouch for an exception; Saturday's lineup remains undecided. Dev has trained all week and is waiting elsewhere.
The scene
Jatin: Sorry I'm late. I've considered quitting, but I want to try today.
Kamau: Dev earned today's seat by showing up ready all week long.
Jatin: I can use spare gear, but I can't promise Saturday yet.
Kamau: Will you vouch for this exception today, with Saturday's lineup still undecided?
The two questions
- 1Would you vouch for giving Jatin today's practice seat, and what would you say to Jatin and Coach Kamau? Why?
- 2How do you decide when to support an exception to a team's rules for someone who is struggling?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
