Moving up a division
You play on a recreational volleyball team that votes on its own decisions.
Your team finished first in its division, and the league has invited it to move up. Seven of the twelve players want tougher games. Quinn, who has kept the schedule and collected fees for nine years, points out cheerfully that she and one other player are the weakest on the roster and would mostly watch from the bench at that level; she says she will go along with whatever the team picks. The vote is tonight, it looks close, and you have not yet said which way you lean.
The two questions
- 1How would you vote, and what would you say to the team before the vote?
- 2How should a team weigh what most members want against what a decision costs a few of them?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
