If you say stay

You row a double with a partner on a masters rowing squad.

The season was planned around your boat, and the championship is in ten weeks. Before a dawn erg test, your partner Daniela tells you and Manu, the assistant coach, that she has been offered a six-month work posting overseas that starts in three weeks.

The scene

Daniela: It is the job I wanted for years. But I promised you this season.

Manu: I'll be straight. I can't find and train a replacement in three weeks.

Daniela: I asked to start later. They said no. If you say stay, I stay. Should I go?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Daniela and Manu?
  2. 2Describe a time a teammate's or partner's personal opportunity conflicted with a commitment you shared. How did you respond?
