The song before the first pitch
You are co-captain of a community softball team, and the coach has left team traditions to you.
In the dugout before the season opener, Dion, a veteran aged 57, reminds Dorian, a new player aged 27, of the team tradition: each newcomer sings a silly song facing the other team's fans. Both turn to you, a co-captain.
The scene
Dion: Every newcomer sings the welcome song, Dorian. Always, since I joined.
Dorian: It's tradition, but singing in front of strangers makes my stomach flip.
Dion: Everybody's nervous; that's the fun. Afterward, the whole team feels like family.
Dorian: I want to belong here, but don't know if this is how.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Dion and Dorian, and what would you decide about the song?
- 2When is it right to keep, change, or drop an unofficial team tradition?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
