Scene to read · Collaboration, Empathy

The old fence can stay

You own a house and share a driveway with your neighbor, Huda.

In March you and Huda agreed to split the cost of a new, taller fence, and she has paid her half of the deposit. Your mother, Shu, 77, who lives with you, has since told Huda the old fence can stay. The three of you are standing in the shared driveway.

The scene

Huda: The fence crew comes Thursday. I've paid my half of the deposit.

Shu: The old one is fine, Huda. A tall fence, and we never talk.

Huda: I love our chats, Shu. But my dog got through twice last month.

Shu: In my day, neighbors didn't need walls. It's your house, though. You decide.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Huda and to your mother, and what would you do about the fence?
  2. 2Describe a time you had made an agreement and then something changed. How did you handle it?

What raters look for

Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
