Scene to read · Collaboration, Resilience

Just the waiting queue

You are a check-in receptionist at a hospital's outpatient phlebotomy desk, and your shift has just ended.

Bharat, 29, the receptionist taking over, is already under performance review; no other receptionist is available tonight. He wants you to process the six waiting check-ins together while he handles new arrivals, estimating twenty minutes but unsure about incomplete paperwork. Your sister Chioma, 34, waits at the desk to drive you to dinner at seven, twenty-five minutes away. After missing your mother's birthday last month, you promised to arrive on time.

The scene

Bharat: Could we clear these six together? I'll handle everyone arriving after them.

Chioma: You promised we'd arrive on time; twenty minutes means we're already late.

Bharat: I'm estimating, but unfinished paperwork could stretch it. My review's already underway.

Chioma: I understand helping him, but what can you actually commit to tonight?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do in this moment, and what would you say to Bharat and Chioma?
  2. 2How do you decide between helping a coworker and keeping a promise to family when someone will be let down either way?

What raters look for

Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
